1 of 5 wounded firefighters still hospitalized in smoky Montana

Record high heat swept through the northern Rockies on Tuesday, and smoke from dozens of large wildfires drove pollution down to unhealthy levels-a grim but increasingly familiar scenario for a drought affected region.

Firefighters throughout the Western United States face an unusually numerous wildfires earlier this summer, as climate change continues to heat up the landscape and droughts take hold across much of the region.

More than 40 major fires have been burning across the three states and smoke has been billowing up from the blaze on the West Coast.

Record temperatures of up to 43 degrees Centigrade were forecast for Tuesday in central and eastern Montana and northern Wyoming, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.

Miles City and Sheridan, Wyoming were also on record.

Moderate amounts of pollution have been reported for the rest of the state.

Environmental Protection Agency data revealed more than twice as many days nationwide in 2021 when environmental monitors found unhealthy air quality, compared to the previous two years.

With dozens of fires spreading in Montana and surrounding states, health officials have warned residents to guard against smoke pollution, as air quality has dropped to unhealthy levels in large parts of the region.
