Mount Nyiragongo in Congo erupted Saturday for the first time in near to two decades, turning the night sky a fiery red light, sending lava pouring over a critical major highway as panicked people tried to flee Goma, a city of almost two million residents.
Chinese state media reported that 21 people were killed after hail, freezing rain and gale-force winds hit the high-altitude race in China’s northwest.
The official Xinhua News Agency said-people died, amid bodily trouble and a sudden drop in temperature.
A spokeswoman for the race venue said there was no prediction of extreme weather over the course of the day.
