Elect Joe Biden has outlined his former Democratic rival Pete Buttigieg as his nominee to become secretary of transportation, and said the 38-year old could be a “new voice” to combat economic inequality, institutional racism and climate change.

A local mayor, a management expert, a large heart policy adviser, a veteran, lieutenant in the US Navy Reserve, an Intelligence Officer stationed in Afghanistan during his time mayor, a new voice with fresh ideas resolve to go past the old policy.

Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, would be the first openly gay individual to be appointed to a Cabinet by the Senate.

Biden welcomed the move, saying there will be more women and color than ever before until his new administration picks its top job and vowed a “Cabinet of barrier-breakers.”
