Beckwourth complex in the Sierra explodes, now causing biggest wildfire in California

People are being evacuated from a community in the US state of Nevada as a wildfire in the adjoining California continues to spread.

The Beckham Complex, an amalgamation of two blitz-induced fires, spread northeast of the forests of the Sierra Nevada region on Saturday after doubling only days earlier.

When the Northeast flank of the fire railed near the border, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was urging people in rural communities like Ranch Haven and Flanagan Flats, north of Reno, to evacuate.

More than 1.200 firefighters were assisted by plane, but because of the heat and low humidity that has left the vegetation dry out, it was expected that the fire, which amounted to only 9 percent, would expand further.

In Idaho, Gov. Brad Little declared a state of emergency on earlier Friday and mobilized the state’s National Guard to help battle the fires that started after lightning storms swept through the drought-ravaged region.

The call for voluntary electricity cuts has been extended for a second day, not just because of the rising heat but also because a wildfire in southern Oregon threatened transmission lines that are carrying electricity to California.

The fire has threatened transmission lines that send electricity through California, leading California Governor Gavin Newsom to push for an emergency ordinance on Friday that would suspend some rules allowing for more power capacity.

The National Weather Service warned the dangerous conditions could cause heat-caused diseases, while California’s grid operators issued a nationwide safety warning from 4pm to 9pm on Saturday to prevent outages and blackouts.
