The government wants to dramatically expand offshore wind power along the East Coast and is on track to approve a huge wind farm off the New Jersey coast to provide electric power for more than 10 million households nationwide by 2030.

A small wind farm is located close to Block Island in waters controlled by Rhode Island, and another little wind farm is located off the coast of Virginia.
The government said it planned to conduct a formal environmental analysis of the Ocean Wind Project off New Jersey.
“For generations, we´ve put off the transition to clean energy and now we´re facing a climate crisis,” said Interior Minister Deb Haaland, whose office is responsible for offshore wind power.
Ocean Wind, 15 miles off the coast of southern New Jersey, is forecast to generate about 1.100 megawatts of power a year, enough to power 500.000 homes when it goes into operation in 2024.
