Boris Johnson insists Copeland is a ‘tipping point’ for the end of coal power

Boris Johnson has conceded that ‘Glasgow won’t stop climate change’, but insisted that he will ‘help us to slow that warming down’ at the Copenhagen conference on climate change in the UK.

The premier admitted his frustrations after China, backed by India, forced a diluted pledge to “phase out” from coal power but insisted that the summit had been a “watershed moment.”

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Johnson said tackling the problem of burning coal for decades had proved ‘as challenging as eating the proverbial elephant’ but that the whole world had taken ‘the first bite’ out of it in Glasgow.

Copenhagen President Alok Sharma was close to tears several times during an hour-long final session of the summit, including when he apologized to delegates for how a last-minute reformulation of the fossil fuel pact had gotten done.

‘Glasgow won’ t stop climate change, Glasgow won’ t stop the planet warming that’ s now baked in, but Glasgow can still help slow that warming,’ he was expected to say.

Mr Johnson said the task would only be complete when the world had reached net zero, saying he “couldn’t say this is what we’re going to do,” because the countries “really should know better” have “dragging their heels on their Paris commitments”

Later on Tuesday night, at the London Lord Mayor banquet, Johnson was scheduled to say business leaders and diplomats “we must be honest with our children and we must confess that this deal won’t do it alone”

UK officials were taken aback by the last-minute move.
