California bushfires burn thousands of huge Sequoia trees

Lightning wildfires have destroyed thousands of giant trees this year, contributing to an eye-watering two-year death rate that makes up almost a fifth of the world’s biggest trees.

Fires in Sequoia National Park and adjacent Sequoia National Forest knocked down more than 3.637-third of California’s forests and set fires estimated to be 2,261-3,637 sequoia trees, which are the largest trees by volume.

A flame-retardant gel, similar to the 60 used as an absorbent in a baby Diaper has been hurled at trees over 200 feet in height.

Close to wildfires, 7.500 to 10.400 redwoods died last year to this extent, native to some 70 groves located on the western side of Sierra Nevada.

The redwood is by volume the largest. It grows in about 70 forests of the western slopes of Sierra Nevada, some of them older than 3.000 years.

A little more than 200 giant snakes have died in the fires, which have been hailed as a warning of what is coming.

More redwoods have been burned at the park in the midst of a five-year drought that essentially halted that plan in 2015.

Growing sequoias demand an enormous amount of water, so a reduction in rainfall could affect the growth of redwood trees.
