Conde Nast’s Epicurious has announced that the food website will cut beef out of their recipes, social media posts and articles.

The move was supposed “pro-planet,” because beef production causes large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, Epicurious Senior Editor Maggie Hoffman and former Digital Director David Tamarkin said in an essay.

Greenhouse gases emitted by the agriculture industry account for 9.9 percent of total US greenhouse gas emissions in 2018, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Cattle are responsible for almost 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and beef, according to the United Nations, is the largest polluter.
