The Covid 19 pandemic was caused by the destruction of natural areas, biodiversity losses and exploitation, UNEP country head Atul Bagai said, stressing that countries including India should redouble their efforts to prevent and reverse ecosystem damage.

India has undertaken the course of short-term economic interest for decades and this has reduced the ability of ecosystems to sustain and support both humans and other life form types, UNEP representative said in talks with PTI.

Several initiatives on that front are relevant to India, among them policy and legislative action, sensitization and intelligent choice, UNEP official said.

Bagai said the main obstacle for restoration was limited awareness of the negative implications of ecosystem degradation.
