Evacuation orders issued in Colorado as it burns near Rocky Mountain National Park

A wildfire that roared through the city, which acts as a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, prompted thousands of residents and businesses to evacuate Tuesday.

The Kruger Rock fire was reported just before 7 p.m. and had expanded to more than 130 acres by 6: 30 p.m. local time, Larimer County authorities said.

It struck around 15 per cent on Tuesday night.

Some buildings were threatened by flames but no damage has yet been reported, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Estes Park Emergency Communication Centre has announced mandatory evacuations are in place around Small Valley and Hermit Park for residents and enterprises in the Meadowdale area and along Highway 36 due to ‘immediate and imminent danger.’

Parts of US 36 in the region have been shut off because of the danger of fires, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Winds near the Kruger Rock Fire are now reaching gusts of around 25 to 30 mph from the west, and is expected to strengthen, with gusts of up to 50 mph possible.

Colorado Public Radio says that the fire started Tuesday morning on the south side of Estes Park, forcing evacuations near Highway 36.
