From wildfires to floods: the Mediterranean is suffering from devastating climate change

While temperatures soar in the South of France, extreme weather conditions affect the rest of the Mediterranean: forest fires in Italy, Greece, and Algeria, and floods in Turkey.

Amid record-warmer summer heat in countries from Turkey to Algeria, a series of deadly wildfires have made extreme weather events being caused by climate change an emerging political challenge for governments throughout the Mediterranean.

Relief arrived Thursday from rain on Euboea, the country’s second-largest island, where some of the worst fires were ravaged.

At least 28 soldiers were among the dead when Algeria deployed the army to help firefighters contain the blaze which destroyed multiple homes in woodland areas.

Fire officials said the forest fires that spread across the Euboea and western Peloponnese and northern Greece remained under control, but that many firefighters remained in the area to make room for potential wildfires.

More than 1.700 people have been evacuated throughout the area, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan saying on Thursday that at least 4.500 staff, 19 helicopters and 24 vessels were involved in the search-and-rescue operation.

The fire brought under control on Thursday was one of more than 200 bushfires that have been raging in Turkey since July 28.

Firefighters across southern Italy fought hundreds of fires that killed four people on Thursday, fuelled by the inexorable temperatures swirling around southern Europe.
