Senior world conservationists, including Australia’s highest profile coral reef experts, have publicly praised Unesco’s decision to classify the Great Barrier Reef as “in danger” a move heavily criticised by the federal government.

Last month, Unesco published a draft decision recommending that the Great Barrier Reef be added to the list of protected world heritage sites.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the Unesco process as ‘horrendous ‘last week and said Australia had ‘spoken to our friends’.

Australia has a lot to lose on limiting its current emissions targets to just 3degrees C (4.5F) above pre-industrial levels, said Prof Hoegh-Guldberg, who coordinated the Australian Academy of Natural Sciences’ s climate change report earlier this year.
