Highway 395 remains closed because of Tamarack fire

A massive wildfire that spiraled out of control over tens of thousands of acres in the rugged region along the California-Nevada border was initially deemed not a threat by U.S. Forest Service officials and allowed to burn without warning.

Up until Friday, a total of 83 major wildfires burned across the US, which have already destroyed a total of 1.366,587 acres, according to the National Advisory Fire Center.

While the Forest Service has not released an official figure for the number of houses destroyed by the fire that spans the California-Nevada state line from crossing the Highway 395 corridor, the department did release a map of damaged or destroyed homes.

The fire killed several buildings and threatened at least 2.700 homes in Douglas County, Nevada, said state governor Steve Sisolak, who declared a state of emergency on Friday in response to the wildfire.

In recent days, crews were trying to keep flames spilling over California-Nevada Interstate 395, but the blaze burning south of Lake Tahoe exploded Thursday afternoon.

The rapidly spreading Dixie Fire close to the Feather River Canyon in Butte County, California, has scorched more than 87.200 acres as of Friday and has been contained only 18%.

Republican Tom McClintock wrote to the head of the US Forest Service on Tuesday, asking why the agency hasn’t contained and monitored the Tamarack fire in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
