Early on Monday, the volcano fired a huge amount of ash and hot gas, the biggest explosive eruption ever since it began to erupt on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent late last week. Authorities were concerned for the lives of those who had refused to evacuate.
The ash from the blasts has fallen in Barbados and other nearby islands
Richard Robertson of the Earthquake Research Center told local broadcaster NBC Radio the volcano’s old and new dome was destroyed and a new crater was formed.
The last eruption of this volcano was 1979.
A government minister who visited the northeastern region on Sunday said he estimates between two and three dozen people remain inside Sandy Bay Community alone, which prompted Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves to urge people to leave the island. I would see people getting ready for water,”he added.
The most active volcano of all is Soufriere Hills in Montserrat, which began an uninterrupted eruption in 1995 and devastated the capital Plymouth in 1997, killing at least 19 people.
Most of the 100.000 population lives in St Vincent
Gonsalves said it may take four months for life to return to normal in St. Vincent, which is part of a chain of islands that formed the pandemic and encompasses the Grenadines.
