Mountain states battle wildfires despite looming winter

Windy-ravaged fires are still blazing in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado.

High winds fueled wildfires raged in Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado, rocking mountainous states as they prepared for winter.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire, which had burned about a half-square mile in the area of Clark, a community of about 300 residents south of the Montana Line.

With temperatures predicted to exceed freezing point in Colorado this week, the Kruge Rockies fire burning about 50 miles from Denver forced evacuations and sent plumes of smoke on toward the eastern Plains.

The fire didn’t spread further overnight, burning an estimated 57 acres through Wednesday and is believed to amount to about 15 percent of its girth, the U.S. Forest Service said.
