Tinkering with the planet’s air to cool the planet’s warming climate is getting so close to reality that two large, powerful groups-one led by scientists, one by former policy makers-are trying to develop ethical and policy.

This month, the American Geophysical Union, the largest society of scientists involved in climate issues, announced the establishment of an ethical framework for “climate intervention” to be discussed during major international negotiations across the globe in Egypt in November.

This suggests that something is “solar geoengineering is finally getting serious,” said climate scientist David Keith of Harvard University, one of the field’s leading scientists.

The world has already melted by 1.1 degrees Celsius since the mid-2 century and scientists say the world will likely exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius by the 2 “s.
