Nigeria is pleased US President Joe Biden’s government has fully re-engaged on the global agenda of climate change – praiseworthy to reinstate the US government’s support for the Paris Agreement, according to Vice President yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Osinbajo was speaking in Abuja on Monday as he welcomed a delegation from the US government, led by Jonathan Finer, deputy White House national security adviser, to the president’s villa.

Four years ago Mr Biden’s government announced that the US was pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement.

But when it took office earlier this year, the Biden administration declared its intention to restore America’s commitment to the Paris accord.

Regarding the democracy summit to be held later this year, President Joe Biden said Nigeria was looking forward to participating in the summit again.

“In endorsing Nigeria’s position on a fair transition from fossil fuels to clean energy in the run-up to the net zero carbon target of 2050, the Vice-President stressed that, inter alia,” we will first consider what is going on, particularly when it comes to gas, being an effective transition fuel, and how many of the Development Finance Institutions (EFIs) and several countries insist on the need to defend gas projects.

He then briefed a U.S. government delegation led by Jonathan Finer, the deputy national security advisor for the White House and currently visiting Nigeria, on Nigeria’s “Energy Turnaround Plan,” the first for Africa.

He briefed the United States delegation on Nigeria’s transition plan, said:”We have done the costing for it and all of what is required to be able to hit net-zero by 2050; also, what the implications would be, given the constraints there, and how realistic it would be to get to net-zero by 2050 or not.”
