Pilot killed fighting Kruger Rock fire — military veteran with night sky experience

The Kruger Rock fire near the southeastern tip of Estes Park, about 40 miles north west of Boulder, killed one pilot battling the blaze and sparked a wave of evacuations, authorities said this week, underscoring their research that the fires are continuing to rise to intensity all year round.

Late Wednesday, the Kruger Rock fire near the southeastern tip of Estes Park, about 40 miles northwest of Boulder, had scorched 145 acres and 40 percent contained, Larry County officials shared in a Facebook post.

A fire warning was released early Tuesday morning and crews found flames starting burning in steep terrain, the Larimer County Sheriff said in a press release.

Gusty winds and low humidity, conditions prone to wildfires, led to a rapid emergence and threatened structures within the area.

Evacuation orders to residents and businesses were issued throughout Tuesday, each binding and voluntary.

By the afternoon, the fire had burned 75 acres, shutting down part of Highway 36, a key east-west route.
