The US Senate voted on Thursday to reverse President Donald Trump’s move to soften Obama-era rules that curb climate-changing methane emissions from oil and gas fields.

Martin Heinrich, D-NM, Angus King, I-ME, and Edward Markey, D-Mass., introduced the resolution under the Congressional Review Act, a bill that would allow Congress to quickly overturn provisions of an earlier executive order by passing a simple majority vote with the signature of President Joe Biden.

Last year’s reversal of this legislation in the Trump administration removed federal requirements for oil and gas companies to monitor and repair methane leaks from pipelines, storage systems, and wells.
