Smoke from the Western wildfires is so prevalent it has reached New York City

Following an evening of poor air quality stretching down from the East Coast, people may soon have a slightly easier breathing experience, thanks to a new cold front driving out the smoke from wildfires in Canada and the West Coast, but not for long.

Red flag warnings throughout the region will continue through Wednesday afternoon, signaling dry and windy conditions with plenty of smoke, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

That will continue until the jet stream changes direction and/or fires decrease, he said.

At least 1.35 million hectares had burned as of Wednesday, with 78 major fires in 13 states and the United States

The Dixie Fire, which has scorched more than 30.000 wooded acres in Butte County, California, since it started last week, was contained to 15 percent Wednesday.

Canada’s British Columbia province declared a state of emergency in response to wildfires there Wednesday.
