Wintry conditions were predicted on Mauna Kea as a snow front brought a cold front across the island chain.
Hawaiian islands could suffer “catastrophic flooding” from a storm system lasting through Tuesday, the National Weather Service told Hawaii.
In some places up to two meter of rain is possible, but from 10 to 15 centimeters is possible.
A storm surge warning was issued for Molokai and Maui Islands.
Landslides are forecast, and in some cases highway closures may result from floods and mudslides, which could cut communities off.
Public schools in Hawaii’s Maui County remained closed on Monday because of the risk of inundation, CNN reported.
Parts of Maui County have already experienced flash flooding and power outages, leading to unsafe conditions, Hawaii Public Schools said Sunday evening.
The heavy rains come days after warnings were put into place about snow and wind on the Big Island highlands, where snowfall was up to a foot in some places.
