On December 30, 2021, the Denver Post reports sustained wind gusts of 100 miles per hour on its network.
580 houses, a hotel and a mall had burned, a state sheriff was quoted as saying
The fire destroyed at least 370 homes in the Sagamore district in Superior, 210 homes in the old town of Superior and several retail stores, including the Elements hotel and a Target store, authorities said.
The town of Louisville of about 21.000 people was evacuated after residents in the town of 13.000 were told to evacuate.
The National Weather Service in Boulder said strong winds speeded up the spread of the fire, calling the conditions “life threatening” to Superior and Louisville individuals.
A fire northwest of Superior was one of a number that broke out in the area as wind gusts hovered at up to 169 mph.
‘Prayers for thousands of families evacuating from the fires in Superior and Boulder County,’ Colorado Governor Jared Pollitt tweeted.
The blaze, on the outskirts of greater Denver, which has been spared extensive drought in eastern Colorado, followed days of heavy snowfall in the Rocky Mountains in the west.
