Why the European Union is a green giant

When the EU borrowed €750 billion to build its own joint debt, it was entitled, in what appeared to be a Star Trek-inspired scenario, EU for the next generation.

The EU’s executive proposal requires that SSFTs be generated from advanced biofuels derived from agricultural and forestry waste and electric fuels, such as green hydrogen.

Combustion powered vehicles will be vanishing from European forecourts by 2035.

SAFs, which are five times higher than kerosene and are available in limited quantities, make up less than 1% of aviation fuel currently used in the EU.

Some behavior should change

The ePURE, the Association of Renewable Ethanol Excellences, said that EU measures aiming to introduce gradual phasing out of sources, such as palm oil, that could be classed as contributing to indirect land use change had helped to address the issue of the sustainability of biofuels.

To expect other countries to mimic an expensive emissions trading system is a much bigger issue – especially if it solely ensures access to a market that will shrink as only one percentage of the world economy.

Under the ReFuelEU Aviation proposal, all aircraft flying from an airport within the bloc must refuel with a mix of kerosene and an SAF (commercial cargo-carrying fuel fluid).
