The worst heat wave for decades is spreading fatalities and chaos through South-Eastern Europe. Wildfires are threatening entire villages, and millions are being instructed not to venture into the midday sun.

Hot air from Africa is driving the heatwave, which has already hit temperatures above 104 degrees Celsius in many areas, and meteorologists say the weather is expected to stretch into next week, shaping up to be the heaviest since the 1980s.

Authorities in Greece, Turkey, Serbia and Bulgaria and many other countries in a region have warned residents to avoid direct sunlight at noon, while fire crews try to protect their residences anywhere in the region.
