Australia’s Prime Minister on Friday backtracked on a threat to skip next month’s landmark UN climate change summit, calling the 12-day meeting in Scotland a “an important event”

His government’s policy goal of reducing Australia’s emissions to a net zero and preferably by 2050, has not embraced this objective.

The 12-day meeting in Scotland will be the largest climate change conference since the landmark Paris talks held in 2015 and has been hailed as a key step toward setting international emissions targets to slow global warming.

The government’s unrealistic ambitious approach to climate change is seen as the reason for the government’s surprise reelection in 2019 and the strong support of voters in coal-rich Queensland state.
