The decision to flee their mountain home overlooking Lake Tahoe was made possible on Thursday by the fact that Johnny White and Lauren McCauley saw flames on the webcam of their own ski resort.
Even as ash spewed underneath a cloud of heavy smoke, Johnny White and Lauren McCauley did not have a panic when they left their home near Echo Summit, some 16 kilometres south of Lake Alps.

“That’s what’s closing the window of opportunity we’ve had to make progress and really get hold of the fire,” said Daniel Berlant, deputy head of the state fire department.
