The California wildfires that scorched the state have brought down at least two redwoods near the celebrated Sherman Tree — and maybe killed hundreds more in the Sierra Nevada.

The lightning-induced fire at the KNP complex that broke out on September 9 has engulfed about 15 giant sequoia trees around the park, Brigham said.

However, two of them-one containing 5.000 trees-turned out to be burnt down by a high-intensity fire, which can trigger flames as high as 100 feet tall that can set the tops of the towering trees on fire.

This could make the monarchs risk ‘like a horrible Roman candle,’, Brigham said.

In the South, the Windy Fire scorched at least 74 redwoods, Garrett Dickman told the Los Angeles Times.

In one grove Dickman counted 29 redwoods, which “just incinerated,” as he told CNN.

California fires have burned more than 3.000 square miles, destroying more than 3.000 homes, businesses, and other structures by 2021.

Rain and snow are forecast in parts of the burn area on Friday, and crews made great strides in containing the wildfires, which have burned to almost 100.000 hectares, 75% contained.
