Dry lightn flashes and high-strength winds in California are creating the potential for new wildfires as thousands of firefighters tackle the blaze.

“A warning of dangerous fire weather issued Thursday afternoon in wide parts of northern California was set to linger until at least Friday at 11 a.m.

“The combination of isolated dry lightning and gusty winds with the dry fuels will bring the potential for critical fire weather conditions,” the National Meteorological Service said.

A historic drought and recent heat waves in the context of climate change have made the struggle against forest fires in the American West more difficult.

Scientists say climate change has made the region warmer and drier during the last 30 years, making the weather even more extreme and wildfires more frequent and damaging.

More than 14.600 firefighters were deployed on Thursday in 13 major wildfires that were active across California.

The Dixie wildfire, which raged through both the mountains of the northern Sierra Nevada and the southern Cascade Range, grew to 1,451 square kilometers (29.850 square miles), although 59% of that was contained.

Nationally, about 22.000 firefighters have been deployed in 79 major wildfires in nine states and Minnesota, according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.
