The Caldor fire at South Lake Tahoe, California, has turned a popular ski area into a hellish vision of climate change Thursday.
Firefighters in California continued the fight against the swelling Caldor fire, which had grown to more than 877.500 acres and was 16 percent contained on Tuesday morning.
Over 3.500 firefighters are involved in trying to bring the blaze, which injured five people, under control.
Senior fire official Thom Porter, of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said that none of the blazes had spread from one Sierra side to the other before this year.
“Historically, we’ve used the terms such as “anomaly,” anomaly,”” unprecedented “and” extreme “to describe the wildfires we have seen burning across the state in the last 10 to 20 years,” Chris Anthony of Cal Fire said at a news conference on Monday.
Traffic on Interstate 50 came to a standstill Monday as people fled the popular holiday spot.
Until last week, Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service reported that 1.470,600 acres have burned in California so far this year, outstripping the previous record of 920,165 acres burned in 2020.
“There is fire activity happening in California that we have never seen before. The critical thing for the public to know is evacuate early,” Cal Fire Chief Thom Porter told the AP.
