The globe must do some work to rapidly cut emissions to restrict warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius – a goal that remains attainable under the Glasgow Climate Pact, the head of the UN climate agency said.

Washington, On Wednesday December 1, US Secretary of State John Kerry said large Greenhouse Gas-emitting countries such as China, India, Russia, etc. must act faster to help people around the world stave off the world’s worst effects of global warming.

With the backing of almost 200 nations, the Glasgow Climate Pact targeted for the first time fossil fuels, which are the largest driver of man-made global warming.

He referred to US support of India’s clean energy initiatives and to a joint deal that the United States concluded with China, the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter, last month, a pledge by Beijing to accelerate emissions reductions.

Compromise was reached to reach an agreement, which somewhat disappointed all the parties concerned.

Last month, at a climate-change conference in Glasgow, Scotland, world leaders agreed to review their national emission-reduction commitments in 2022 to help ensure the global body can meet the 2015 Paris climate treaty’s 1.5 degree target.

The conference also marked an important step forward because it recognizes that vulnerable countries need more financial support, both for their transition to fossil fuels and in preparing themselves for the aftermath of the climate change such as strong storms and heat waves.

Scientists warn that overshooting this threshold can trigger catastrophic climate consequences, ranging from rising sea levels to more frequent strong storms, drought and floods.
