According to the news agency Kyodo News, 17 people were unaccounted for during the incident.
“The latest update from the ground…(is) 34 people died, 17 are missing,” emergency agency spokesman Abdul Muhari told AFP news agency.
Authorities previously said at least 3.000 homes were destroyed and 169 people injured in the eruption of the Semeru mountain in East Java province.
The mountain on the island of Java opened up on Saturday as volcanic ash hit the heavens and hot mud rained down on villages as thousands fled their homes in panic.
Initial local media reports said least one people had been killed and 41 burned.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire where the confluence of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity, and has close to 130 active volcanoes.
President Joko Widodo visited an affected village and pledged a “good care” for those displaced, while also offering his condolences for those affected by the disaster, Kyodo News reported.
