Southern California Fire 80% Controlled, Residents Go Home

Residents evacuated because of the Alisal fire west of Santa Barbara were able to go home.

On Sunday, the fires were few and far between and firefighters concentrated on reinforcing the containment.

The fire was 80% contained by Monday morning and had consumed around 17.200 hectares in size.

More than 1.600 firefighters fought the blaze in the Santa Ynez Mountains west of Santa Barbara from the ground and from the air.

In the Sierra Nevada mountains the KNP complex fire has been 55% contained and no progress was anticipated in the daily status report released Monday.

A historic drought in the United States West, stemming from climate change, is making tackling wildfires more difficult.

It was expected that the cooler air mass and significantly higher humidity in the KNP area would continue.
