Firefighters fighting a devastating wildfire season in California have gone out of their way to contain the massive Caldor fire, which has threatened a popular tourist town for days, and the likelihood of more wildfires in forthcoming weeks.
Cal Fire says as of earlier today the fire has burned 212.907 acres and is 29% under control.
It has been burning burning for nearly three weeks as it heads for the Nevada border.
The 210,259-acre fire became more firefighter-controlled from 20 percent Wednesday morning to 25 percent Thursday morning, Cal Fire said.
Shen in the earlier days cooler winds brought in embers that caused wildfires almost immediately after landing on the dry vegetation.
In the past few days, the combination of the typical summer cross-country winds that blow up and down the corridor of Highway 50 with high winds in its atmosphere has created the perfect formula for the spread of the fire.
Preventing the fire from spreading to the Kirkwood Mountain Resort and surrounding cottages has been one of the weekend’s top priorities, firefighters said.
Crews also lit fires and knocked down trees south of the Christmas Valley to prevent falling embers getting blown so fast.
