James Shaw wants climate talks delivers results

“The coronavirus pandemic showed that human beings are able to respond really well to a coming crisis,” said James Shaw, New Zealand’s Secretary of Climate Change.

I know that as we go along the world has changed fundamentally.”The government of New Zealand has promised that the country will move to carbon neutral by 2050.

Shaw said he planned to announce at Glasgow a more ambitious goal to cut emissions over the next decade and he hope many other countries will now pursue higher targets too.

He said his top priority was making sure rich countries could afford to spend 100 billion US dollars annually to help poorer countries shift to cleaner health.

This caused a breach of trust, and the consensus reached under the Paris Accord of 2015 to crumble, Shaw said.

He added that his top priority is also an apology for authoritarian regimes that interferes with international cooperation.

Shaw said that he is doubtful that some of the positive environmental changes that people created during the pandemic – such as moving more from home to work and driving less – will be sustainable.

Shaw said a key part of his trip to Glasgow was to be with colleagues from the low Pacific islands, which are already feeling the pervasive impacts of climate change from the harsh cyclones and rising sea levels.
