Gen. Antonio Guterres called on Thursday for immediate bold measures to combat climate change, Xinhua reported.

The report “United in Science 1.5,” released a few weeks before the COP26 Climate Change summit by a number of UN agencies and scientific partners, argues that limiting global warming to 1.5C for now will be impossible without prompt and comprehensive emissions reductions.

Greenhouse gas emissions peaked in 2019 and declined by 5.6 percent in 2020 due to the constraints of Covid-19 and the economic decline.

COP26 is taking place in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November.

“an alarming appraisal of just how far off course we are”Antonio Guterres

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the report’s findings are “an alarming assessment of the distance we are from the Paris objective.”

The findings are clear and had an impact on health, lives, and livelihoods throughout the world, he said.

A total reduction in greenhouse gases in 2020 is expected to reduce the annual increase in atmospheric concentrations of long-lived greenhouse gases, but the effect is “too small to be distinguished from natural variability” it said.

Those changes were only the start of worse, he warned.
