A weather system moving through northwest California was expected to introduce dry lightning and stormy winds early Friday, triggering the possibility of new wildfires as thousands of firefighters make progress battling existing fires.

“The combination of isolated dry lightning and gusty winds with the dry fuels will bring the potential for critical fire weather conditions,” the National Meteorological Service said.

The official downtown San Francisco raingauge recorded 0.01 centimetres (0.22 inches) of rain by about 5 am, marking the first time it had rained there since 1978, according to the Weather Service.

The last tangible September rain fell in the city in 2019.

“A warning of dangerous fire weather issued Thursday afternoon in wide parts of northern California was set to linger until at least Friday at 11 a.m.

An area set on fire by the Bobcat Fire in the hills northeast of Los Angeles received more than half an inch of rain, most of it within around 15 minutes.

More than 14.600 firefighters were deployed to 13 active large California fires last night.

A historic drought and recent heat waves in the context of climate change have made the struggle against forest fires in the American West more difficult.
