New data reveals how the position and intensity of the North Atlantic jet stream has changed over the past 1.250 years.

The study was led by Matthew Osman, a post-doctoral candidate with the University of Arizona Centre for Climate Systems

Storm tracks influence the weather and climate throughout Greenland and influence rainfall and changes in temperature on the island.

The reconstructions indicate that natural variability has hitherto obtruded on the impact of man-made warming on atmospheric dynamics at mid-latitudes over the annual and longer periods of time.

The paper shows that while natural variability has largely brought the position of the North Atlantic jet stream under control, long-term warming of the climate could lead to substantial deviations from the norm.
