Four major indicators of climate change all hit new records in 2021, the United Nations said on Wednesday, warning that the global energy system would drive mankind into disaster.

The top United Nations official on Wednesday unveiled a five-point plan to boost renewable energy use in the hope of reviving global attention to climate change, as the United Nations Meteorological Service records that greenhouse gas concentrations, ocean warming, sea level rise, and ocean acidification have reached record highs in the last year.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change had predicted with “very high confidence” that the acidity levels of the open ocean’ s surface were the highest for at least 26.000 years.

“Our climate is changing before our eyes,” World Meteorological Organization chief Petteri Taalas said.

Levels of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere have topped previous records in 2021, the WMO said.

Ocean warming hit a record high last year, surpassing 2020, according to the report.

Global mean sea level reached a new record high in 2021, as sea levels increased by an average of 4.5 millimetres annually between 2013 and 2021, the report said.
