The Turkish parliament ratified the Paris climate accord on Wednesday, making it the last G20 country to do so after years of dithering about the injustices it felt it had to carry out as a part of the agreement.
Ankara did not ratify the agreement, however, arguing that it should not be seen as an industrialized country under the deal, giving better responsibility to Turkey.
If Turkey were to be removed from the list of Annex I countries, it could obtain the benefits of the investments, insurance and technological transfer available under the Paris Accord.
A statement endorsed by parliament stated that Turkey, as a developing country, ratifies the agreement and will implement it as long as it does not “harm its right to economic and social development.”
