Despite raising climate goals, as part of the UN Environment programme, the world will increase fossil fuel production until 2040 and beyond.

The United Nations Environment Programme’s report on the state of the environment, published less than two weeks before the Glasgow meeting of the crucial COP26 climate talks, reveals no “policies or discourses” by the federal government in Australia which might help reduce fossil fuel production.

The report singled out Australia for supporting fossil fuels, including its “gas-led recovery” that includes subsidising huge new gas ponds.

The BundeswesternGerman government does not plan any restrictions for carbon intensive industries.

This discrepancy – the gap between the forecast output of greenhouse gases from countries and the levels needed to keep global warming within a specified level – is referred to as an “production gap”
