Cyclone Asani is expected to sweep across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and carry heavy rains and high winds late on Monday night, the Indian weather agency said.

The weather system that had formed into a low pressure area over the previous week strengthened to a low on Monday, prompting the weather bureau to issue an advance warning for the Andaman islands.

“The Bay of Bengal is one of the warmest seas in the world. During most of the time of the year, the sea surface temperatures are around 29 degrees. They can also rise to 30 degrees in pockets, as is the case now,” a administration meteorologist said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
