Temperatures in the Arctic and Antarctica are rising at twice the rate of the rest of the world, and they are changing the dynamics in the region.

“Everything depends on the carbon produced by phytoplankton, no matter where you are in ocean waters,” said Paty Matrai, one of the coauthors of the study.

The discovery will improve understanding of the carbon cycle as well as the availability of nutrients in this rapidly warming and changes environment.

“These changes are impacting people and their lives and livelihoods from “What’s for dinner tonight?” What’s for dinner tonight?”to international proportions affect people’s life.”

It is called primary production and plays an important role in the global carbon cycle.

In the ocean virtually all of its primary production occurs through phytoplankton.
