Faizuddin remains traumatised from the lightning strike that killed his three friends, taking selfies in a 400-year-old fortress in India, where deadly blows from climate change are becoming increasingly common.

Dozens of people have found similarly grisly experiences in the western desert state of Rajasthan this year, where deaths from thunderstorms were previously unheard of.

“I was hit by three thunderbolts, one after the other,” Faizuddin said in a trembling voice as he lay shrouded in a blanket in his modest house in Jaipur.

During the July storm, which killed eight people, he and his teenage friend trio climbed hundreds of steps to the pavilion overlooking the Amber Palace.
