An elderly couple has died in a wildfire in the southwestern US state of New Mexico, a New Mexico state police have announced.
Crews estimated that at least 150 buildings were destroyed by the blaze and the fire had burnt more than 5.300 acres and was 0 percent contained, according to InciWeb.
The body of the couple was found near their home on Wednesday afternoon after family members notified Ruidoso police that the two men had attempted to evacuate but hadn’t been located.
Fox Weather reported early Thursday morning that officials said that firefighters responded to a house in Ruidoso Township after family members said they did not hear of the elderly couple, who were trying to evacuate.
Authorities worked to confirm the identities of the two individuals.
In the city of Ruidoso in the state of New Mexico a wildfire has caused approximately 150 buildings, including houses, to burn, according to officials.
The cause of the blaze is still being investigated, with five other major blazes reported on Tuesday.
The speed of fire spreading became accelerated by wind gusts of 90 mph.
