Global warming is already affecting the health of humanity to such an extent that emergency measures to combat climate change cannot be put on ice while the outside world deals with the Covid-19 pandemic, specialist medical magazines around the world warned on Monday.
“Health is already being harmed by global temperature increases and the destruction of the natural world,” the editorial, which was written by the editors-in-chief of more than a dozen journals including Lancet, the East African Medical Journal, the Revista de Saude Publica and the International Nursing Review prior to the Cop26 climate summit in November, said.
Temperature has increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius or so since the pre-industrial era.
The editorial, by the authors of more than a dozen journals, including The Lancet, The East African Medical magazine, the Revista de Saude Publica, and The International Nursing Review, claims that this has created a multitude of health problems.
Global warming has also contributed to a decline in global crop yields, from around 1.8% to 5.6 / 6% since 1981, which in combination with the effects of extreme weather and soil exhaustion is hampering efforts to reduce malnutrition.
5/ Secondly, crucially, wealthy communities/countries must do more to support those who have contributed least and are most affected, as @LukoyeAtwoli of the East African Medical Journal says
