Numerous wildfires have been reported in the space of 24 hours, along the extensive fire lines from the Caldor fire.
A combination of typical summertime cross-country winds that blow up and down the Highway 50 corridor the past few days and strong atmospheric winds has provided a perfect recipe for the proliferation of fire.
Fueled by swirling winds and dry conditions, the Caldor Fire exploded the size and scope of the California wildfire over the weekend, crisscrossing the Sierra Nevada to threaten South Lake Tahoe, the most populated town on the iconic lake.
A bulldozer cut through a fire line on the western edge of the Sierra-at-Tahoe ski area.
Firefighters struggle to contain the flames as they rush to the southeastern tip of Lake Tahoe.
The fire has destroyed 1,282 buildings and threatens another 12,738.
Other factors are embers that ignite dry vegetation kilometers from the fire, creating new small wildfires that are growing and interlinked with the main fire.
It burnt more than 200.000 hectares, demolished 780 structures and injured five people.
Heavenly looks great. Snow machines going, keeping things nice and wet. Surrounding areas along #PioneerTrail are quiet. @FOX40 #CaldorFire pic.twitter.com/tsvKfGxLCa
