President Joe Biden signed an emergency declaration for Kentucky on Saturday, opening the door for FEMA and other government agencies to coordinate disaster response.
“Whatever is needed, the federal government is going to find a way to supply it,” Biden told a news conference in Delaware later Saturday.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the tornadoes, which ripped a 200-mile loop across his state and razed homes and businesses to the ground, have ‘devastation like none of us have ever seen before,’ and told CBS ‘this tornado didn’t discriminate against anybody in its path, even if they were trying to be safe.’
Mayfield, Kentucky, was one of the most severely-affected communities. Satellite pictures showed a strip of destruction, including a candle factory, which was completely destroyed.
More than 100 workers were at the factory at the time of the tornado, 40 of them rescued through Saturday.
