India on Monday voted against a draft UN Security Council resolution that would “securitise” action to tackle climate change and undermine the hard-won, consensual Glasgow accords.
He said however that there must be no confusion regarding India’s commitment to fighting climate change and that it will always support real climate action and serious climate justice.
While it gained the support of 12 of the Council’s 15 members, Russia vetoed the resolution, while China abstained.
He also restated the early requirement for the developed countries to commit a billion US dollars to financing climate, and said that climate finance must be approached with the same care as climate policy.
The resolution attempted to painted the climate as a topic threatening global peace and security, but those familiar with the matter said the UN Security Council was not the right forum to discuss it.
Tirumurti said the resolution sends the wrong message to the developing world that “instead of addressing their worries and calling developed countries accountable for meeting their UNFCCC obligations, we are willing to be divided and attacked under the guise of safety.
India was also concerned at the way the matter was brought to the Security Council, and ‘no real requirement for this resolution except for bringing climate change under the ambit of the Security Council’ Tirovachuk stated.
