Authorities in Alaska issued an Icemageddon alert as conditions varied from record heat to record snowfall across the state.

After temperatures in Kodiak, 67 degrees Fahrenheit (19.4 degrees Celsius)- the highest December temperature ever recorded in Alaska – fell in just an hour, inland was still pouring 25 inches (25 mm) of rain – rainfall unmatched in decades.

The city experience warmer weather than Southern California on December 26, which is noteworthy because Alaska gets few sunlight this time of year.

The tourist destination of Lake Tahoe, hit by dense snow a few months ago in the wake of wildfires that forced residents to leave, was sewn off by the rest of the state.

“December was a wild, wacky and impactful winter month weather-wise over much of Alaska,” Rick Thoman of the Alaska center for climate research and policies wrote on Twitter.
