Spain battles wildfires as heatwave subsides

In the north-west of Spain a wildfire is getting out of control, which the authorities say is destroying more than 19.000 hectares of land in the midst of a ferocious heatwave.
The worst of the blazes in the northwest mountains range, Sierra de Culebra, has already destroyed over 25.000 hectares, the regional authorities announced.
Hundreds of fire officials and emergency services, as well as 40 fire engines, 20 helicopters and four aircraft have been deployed to battle the blaze caused by lightning strike on 15 June.
Residents from roughly 20 villages that had been evacuated from their homes were allowed to return home on Sunday morning because of the improved state of play, according to local officials.
